Review (#giftedbook): The Lords of Night

A new review coming at you late this Friday night!

Thanks to NetGalley and Disney Publishing for this free digital copy in exchange for an honest review. This book is available now!

Up today is The Lords of Night, a fun middle-grade fantasy/adventure/mythology story by J.C. Cervantes.

TLoN is a spin-off of the middle-grade Storm Runner series and I really liked it! This series follows Ren, a character I adored in the original series and I’m so glad she gets her own! Ren is a super powerful godborn who has shadow bruja magic from her dad’s side and a time rope from her mother Pacific, goddess of time. Ren’s destiny, which was always hinted at in the original series, begins to reveal itself throughout this book. I loved seeing this world through Ren’s perspective and her friendship with the god Ah Puch. The story really kept me guessing and also…THE ENDING. WHAT?!? Let’s just say…it was unexpected for sure. TLoN starts to bring together more Aztec lore along with the Mayan, and I found those aspects of the book especially fascinating. I truly can’t wait for the next book to see what awaits these characters.

If this seems interesting to you, I absolutely recommend reading The Storm Runner series first. 1) They’re good books and 2) It’s super helpful to know what happened in those books as backstory to this one. While this is very much Ren’s story, it was nice to have familiar characters from the first series make some appearances!
